mathemagics is the second opening theme song of the Owarimonogatari anime series and the theme song of the Sodachi Riddle and Sodachi Lost (only in the TV broadcast) story arcs. It was performed by Marina Inoue, who voiced Sodachi Oikura.

Background Edit

The opening sequence used for the song involves images of Sodachi Oikura and Koyomi Araragi rendered through mirrored and kaleidoscopic views. The sequence also involves geometric shapes and optical illusions like tesseracts and toruses.

Lyrics Edit

The original lyrics of the song is written in a cipher that substitutes most of the romanized Japanese lyrics into a two-digit number (from 01 for A to 26 for Z). The equal sign found in the song translates to "is" (は, wa) and "that is" (それは, sore wa), carrying the function of indicators in the mathematical and grammatical sense respectively. Meanwhile the "unpaired 1s" found in the song (underlined in the lyrics below) translates to the kanji for "one", creating the Japanese words "ichido" (一度) and "hitorikiri" (一人きり).

Japanese Rōmaji English Translation
Zutto wakatteta

Kotoba wa usobakari
Kantan ni wasureru futashika de aimai na mono

I knew all along

That words were nothing but lies
Easily forgotten, uncertain and vague

Shinjitsu mo neji fuseteku

Mahou ni nigekonde

So I escape into magic

Twisting the truth

Taiyou mo kieta natsu

Hitorikiri de watashi ga
Michibiki dashita kotae

During that summer where the sun had disappeared,

All alone, the answer
That I came to was…

Sore wa

Kimi datta
Mitsuketa no

It was you

I had finally found it

Dare yori mo tadashii hazu no kotae wo The answer, [whom] should have been more correct than any other…
Kitaishi tabun dake

Warikirenakunatte
Bokura ni ate wa maru koushiki wo sagashiteita

The more I longed for it

The more it was elusive to me
The formula I searched for, which would fit us both

Kimi ga nee warai kakeru dakede mou

Ureshikute

You know, even when you just smile at me

It makes me so happy

Taiyou mo kieta natsu

Hitorikiri de watashi ga
Michibiki dashita kotae

During that summer where the sun had disappeared,

All alone, the answer
That I came to was…

Sore wa

Kimi datta
Mitsuketa no

It was you

I had finally found it

Dare yori mo tadashii hazu no kotae wo The answer, [whom] should have been more correct than any other…
Jibun de chanto machigawa na ai to

Itsumade datte wakaranakute
Tatta hitotsu no uso de yokatta
Kimi no uso ni o shita osaretakatta

If I don’t make my own mistakes

I will never learn
All I wanted was a single lie
A lie from you to knock me off my feet

Mahou ga tokeru mae ni

Mou ichido dake waratte

Before this magic melts away

Smile for me, one more time

Taiyou mo kieta natsu

Hitorikiri de watashi ga
Michibiki dashita kotae

During that summer where the sun had disappeared,

All alone, the answer
That I came to was…

Sore wa

Kimi datta
Mitsuketa no

It was you

I had finally found it

Mitsuketa to

Omotta no

I thought…

I thought I had found it

Dare yori mo tadashii hazu no kotae wo
The answer, [whom] should have been more correct than any other…
